Our special Scouts astronomy night at Mount Stromlo Observatory is fast approaching on Saturday 15 August 2015!
Registrations are now closed.
Here is a link to the directions to Mount Stromlo Observatory. There will be marshals directing people to parking. We recommend groups attending consider car-pooling from their halls.
Scouts and Guides who have registered and attend on the night will receive their limited edition Reach for the Stars badge. Remember to bring along the Eventbrite tickets to swap over for the badge. Please be assured we have enough ordered enough badges for all youth members and Leaders attending.
Registration will be available from 6pm. Some limited star gazing will be available while volunteers from the Canberra Astronomical Society set up their telescopes for us. We will have a series of kid-friendly astronomy talks, with talks for Joeys and Cubs up first from 7pm.
Warm clothing is highly recommended. In the event of cloudy weather, star gazing will be cancelled. The talks will occur regardless of the weather.
Supporting program materials have been distributed to Leaders. Download your copy here. Three worksheets have also been developed to help youth members achieve their respective Adventure Challenge (Joeys), Space Level 1 (Cubs) and Astronomer (Scouts) badges.
Reminder that supervision is to be provided by the adults and Leaders of attending youth members.
6.00-7.00pm – registrations/star gazing
6.45pm – Short opening ceremony in Talk Venue 1
7.00-9.00 pm – 20 minute astronomy talks/star gazing
Download the talk schedule and venue map.
Please note: Due to venue constraints, priority will be given to youth members in attending talks.
We gratefully received funding for this project via an ACT National Science Week seed grant! A special thanks also goes to Dr Brad Tucker from Mount Stromlo Observatory.
